Kantha of No Comfort

Four million Bengali-speaking Muslims in the Indian state of Assam have had their citizenship revoked, requiring them to provide documentation proving that they were living on the Assam side of the border at the time in 1971 when Bangladesh was established. Until they are able to provide this evidence and secure their place on the National Citizens Register, they and their children cannot attend school, expect protection from the police services or access to the justice system. Nor, conveniently, are they able to vote in the local elections.

Kantha is a tradition of embroidery in the region, most recognisably used in its most basic form for making bedding out of old saris. The project Kantha of No Comfort is to highlight how easy it is for governments to render large populations stateless.
